lood
Case Study
Business owner and industrial designer David Robinson approached me to help realise a vision for a new design studio that champions local craft and young designers in a competitive industry.

That vision is ‘lood’, a product design studio based in the humble suburbs of Melbourne, Australia. I was responsible for the visual identity, as well as the design of the website and many other creative outcomes ranging from printed media to signage and social assets.

01. ResearchStarting out, David showed me what he had in mind for lood, and while the idea was there, it wasn’t established visually.

I learned as much as I could about his inspirations, and then began by reseaching what makes lood unique, as well as it’s constructive and industrial influence.

I looked to the simplicity and structure of tech drawings as a source of inspiration, and utilised elements of assembly in the final branding by creating ‘Philip’, a star symbol reminiscent of a philips head screw.

02. RealisationBy this stage, I had established the logo and symbol, which then layed the groundwork for the visual aesthetic, which would be simple but strong.

This was a callback to the constructive and creative nature of David’s process, with a love of crafting things with an understated strength and courage.

03. RefinementAfter the visual identity was established, the creation of the website was an important tool not just for the point of purchase, but as a tool to secure the brand as something more than just an idea, but as a concrete business that puts design and storytelling first.

Our original designs for the website included sections of storytelling before an object was available for puchase, and this was done to inform the customer of the work and value that went into a single product.

The storytelling would include work in progress videos, sketches, mockups, prototypes from a variety of media (image, video and illustration).

04. ReleaseWe released the website and hosted an opening event, all of which happened very quickly. From there I did more brand work and helped with social media content once the website was completed, and also worked on brand values and how lood would operate on a production leve.

lood was one of the greatest opportunities for me as a young designer, as it gave me autonomy from early in my career to lead a brand vision, and establish an aesthetic that not only spans branding but the products themselves and how they’re presented.

05. ReflectionAs a result of designing lood with a strong brand and framing products in a way that aligned with the businesses core love of craftsmanship, lood products are now available in a wide range of stockists in the interior space in Australia.

They are known on social media for maintaining a consistent brand image that’s practical but clean and organised, all underlining the values of the business.

They’ve been featured in interior and architecture publications like the Local Marketplace, and the products themselves have gone on to be finalists and winners in the Vivid Emerging Designer Awards.

La Onda Latin Mex
Case Study
Restaurant owners Alex and Maria approached me to design a new website, a helpful refresh that would enable them to take on catering and consolidate their brand image into one format.

Being responsible for the layout, design and build of the website, I was able to extend the existing brand while giving them the tools to manage it for future usage.

01. ResearchShared with me where the stories and beautiful culture that inspired La Onda, so I utilised the existing branding but wanted to move into a bolder direction by using colourblocking and the underused character graphics to create pages with a fun energy, and something that doesn’t immediately feel like a restaurant but more like a space to show La Onda’s inspiration.

I paid attention to the use of colour in their branding and their existing photography to make every touchpoint as consistent as possible.

02. RealisationWe landed on bold use of colour and stylised typography, and went to work laying the groundwork for how the user would traverse the website. Using Squarespace as an easy to use platform, it allowed us to have lots of customisation through coding style sheets and HTML codes to give the website that extra flair through custom buttons and animations.

03. RefinementAfter establishing the structure and the initial visuals, we where able to see where we could add usability and interest into the website. We added integration for catering as well as redesigned printed menus that could be used in the website and store to keep things consistent.

One thing I was told about that was nowhere to be seen in the original branding or original website was the history behind all of the illustrated icons, like the influence of Cantinflas and Chespirito on western popular culture, or the power of salsa from Celia Cruz.

I was really intrigued because I had learned something new, and I wanted to give people the ability to also learn about these figures and celebrate the latin culture through learning about the history. What I did was include all of the icons at the bottom, and create secret pages that could only be discovered when clicking on the icons, and this added a sense of mystery and value when a user could discover these pages, allowing them to learn the history and have a tighter connection to the brands values.

04. ReleaseWe released the website and it was a success, as more catering orders came through, events/classes that where hosted at the restaurant could also be seen on the website which helped with visibility and attendance rates.

05. ReflectionThe design of the website was an awesome opportunity for me to help business owners Alex and Maria have a main base to design any deliverables, and act as a guide to make the visual choices that align closer to their brand image and values.

Through the design of the website, I was able to also give them the autonomy to have control over the website through going through the system in person, showing them how to add pages or make small edits.

I wanted them the be able to have responsibility over it and not rely on my services to make simple changes, and focus more of their resources and time to help the business itself.
